Coughing Cats

Do you know what a coughing cat looks and sounds like? Here are some clips:

Coughing can be hard for owners to recognise - if you look at the clips above, you will see the cats all crouch low to the ground, extend their neck and cough. Typically they swallow afterwards (often because they've coughed up some mucus which they then swallow).

If your cat is coughing, it's best to have him/her checked over. If you aren't sure what your cat is doing, please record an episode eg with your phone, it'll help us decide if it's a cough, retch, sneeze, reverse sneeze or other issue.

Your cat may need to have further investigations to find out the underlying cause. Try not to worry - many coughing cats are actually asthmatic, and can be well controlled with medication.
