Did you know that cats can be blood donors?
One of our vets Natalie Pryor had a phone call from a vet friend of hers in Leicester late on Friday evening, asking if her cat could donate blood to a critically ill patient.
So Natalie and Pablo headed off to Leicester at midnight, and he donated 50ml of blood in the early hours of the morning. Here he is enjoying a meal soon after donating!
Blood donation in cats isn't straight forward and not commonly done, they usually need an anaesthetic for their own protection. If an ill cat needs a blood transfusion, it is common for the blood to be taken from the donor cat and used immediately - if a suitable donor cat can be found, which is why Pablo was such a star!
Well done Natalie and Pablo, what a great thing to do!
