University of Nottingham Veterinary School
There are 8 vet schools in the UK, and we regularly have students 'seeing practice' with us as part of their training. They will observe what our vets do, and learn on their way to qualifying. We are happy to play this small part in training the vets of the future!
We have also helped vet students from Nottingham University with their 'elective projects' - the students have the opportunity to plan a study, which hopefully will give us (as a profession) more information about our patients and their diseases. For example, one student (Laura) came for a week to see how many dogs were seen by us with lumps, and what type of lump they had. It's amazing to think that no one had ever done this in the UK, but thanks to this study (by Laura Lump as she was known to us!!!!) we have a better idea of the number of dogs with lumps, and what they were (e.g. fatty lumps, cancerous ones, or benign ones).
Some feedback from 2 recent students:
'This is a really good placement for anyone interested in small animals with a particular interest in internal medicine, cardiology and dermatology. The vets are really good at discussing cases with you and the whole team is really friendly.'
'Really good placement, saw some very interesting cases. The vets and nurse were willing to answer questions/discuss cases. Would definitely recommend.'
